Safety Advice

  • Take enough food and drink – there is nothing along the way, there are no shops in Kirk Yetholm, and don’t rely on the Border Hotel being open. Don’t be tempted to drink out of streams!
  • Check the weather forecast and wear & pack appropriate clothing – the route is exposed and there is no shelter along the way
  • Wear trail shoes – there are some rocky paths and (even on drier days) there will be slippy and muddy patches
  • Make sure someone knows you are doing this with guideline timings – reception is patchy or non-existent for large portions of the route.
  • Other than Wooler and Kirk Yetholm, Hethpool (at the 8.5M and 18.5M marks) is the only other location easily accessible by car.
